At 2:00 p.m. local time on September 14, 2021 (8:00 p.m. Beijing time on September 14, 2021) in Zurich, Switzerland, the online awards ceremony for the 2021 FIDIC Global Engineering Project Awards was held. The Pingtang Bridge project won the prestigious 2021 FIDIC Global Engineering Project Outstanding Award—the award is often referred to as the “Nobel Prize” of the engineering world.
Founded in 1913, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers is the world’s leading non-governmental organization in the engineering consulting industry. The FIDIC Global Project Awards Committee has consistently upheld the core principles of “innovation, high quality, technical excellence, sustainability, and integrity,” annually selecting and honoring a group of project initiatives from around the globe that have made outstanding contributions to global economic and social development. The projects nominated for the awards cover nearly all areas of infrastructure construction, including high-speed railways, expressways, bridges, tunnels, water conservancy, and energy. Since its inception, the FIDIC Global Project Awards have recognized numerous world-class projects, such as the Three Gorges Water Control Project on the Yangtze River, the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, and the 500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope.
This year, along with the Pingtang Bridge, a total of 12 Chinese engineering projects—including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (Excellence Award), the Chengdu-Guiyang High-Speed Railway (Outstanding Award), and the Beijing Daxing Airport Project (Outstanding Award)—have also been awarded the FIDIC Global Engineering Project Awards.

This award for the Pingtang Bridge is another international accolade our company has received, following the “Gustav Lindenthal” Award. It also marks the first time that an engineering design and consulting firm from our province has been honored with this prize. The award fully demonstrates our company’s technical strength in the field of engineering design and consulting, enhances our company’s international visibility, and signifies that our engineering design and consulting capabilities have entered the global forefront, laying a solid foundation for further expansion into overseas markets.

Introduction to the Pingtang Bridge: The Pingtang Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 2 × 550 meters, featuring three towers and a double-cable-plane steel-concrete composite girder. The central tower stands at 332 meters high, making it the world’s tallest concrete bridge tower. Construction of the project commenced on April 29, 2016, and the bridge was completed and opened to traffic on December 31, 2019. During the design phase, in response to the structural requirements of the towers, elements such as the unique costumes and dances of the local ethnic minorities were incorporated into the tower’s architectural design. Ultimately, the “skirt-like” tower shape was selected, seamlessly integrating with the main girders and cables to create a highly dynamic overall bridge structure. During construction, new types of construction equipment were developed, and the innovative technique of longitudinally shifting and rotating entire segments of steel girders for suspended assembly was pioneered worldwide. Additionally, the accompanying “Sky Bridge” sightseeing service area has created hundreds of jobs, providing high-quality travel services to passing travelers while also boosting the economic development of the local ethnic minority regions.
