“Thinking is all about problems; doing is the answer,”—this is the favorite saying of Yang Hongbo, a senior-level engineer with 16 years of experience.
Yang Hongbo, who has a slender build, always seems to have boundless energy in the eyes of his colleagues. “Whether it’s routine work or tackling challenging projects, it seems that Engineer Yang is always brimming with enthusiasm for his job,” say his colleagues. Over the years at the company, he has consistently held himself to high standards and never allowed himself to become complacent. He encourages his colleagues to engage in discussions and collaborative innovation, and everyone is inspired by his passionate dedication to his work. Since joining Kan She Co., Ltd., he has been responsible for the design of more than 40 extra-large bridges, including the Liuchong River Super Bridge, Dimu River Super Bridge, Huiluo Hongshui River Super Bridge, Liuguang River Super Bridge, Pingtang Super Bridge, Kaizhou Lake Super Bridge, Lüzhijiang Super Bridge, Fenglin Super Bridge, and Tuanjie Super Bridge.
He loves tackling challenging problems and is passionate about innovative research. He tirelessly draws on advanced achievements in bridge design, both domestically and internationally, incorporating innovative ideas into his work and successfully solving numerous technical challenges. Yanzhi River Super Bridge For the asymmetric continuous rigid-frame bridge with a main span of 198 meters, he proposed several measures in the design—including “improving the arrangement of longitudinal prestressing tendons, adding second-stage tendons for closure of the cast-in-place segments in the side spans, and optimizing the configuration of ordinary reinforcement in the box girder”—which were successfully implemented in practice. These measures effectively addressed the issues of downward deflection and bottom-flange cracking in the long-span continuous rigid-frame bridge, yielding excellent results. Liuchong River Supermajor Bridge This prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge, with a main span of 438 meters, ranks among the top 10 in China for bridges of this type in terms of span length. It is also the concrete cable-stayed bridge with the largest span ever built in China’s mountainous regions. Previously, our company had virtually no experience in designing large-span bridges, meaning we had to start from scratch on every front. He meticulously studied extensive technical data, literature, and journals, and humbly sought advice from senior experts within the company as well as from his peers in the domestic design community. Through continuous exploration and collaboration with colleagues on the large-span bridge design innovation team, he tackled one challenge after another, successfully completing the design task and mastering the core design technologies for large-span cable-stayed bridges. Hongshui River Super Bridge In his design, he proposed a “non-symmetric hybrid steel-concrete composite beam cable-stayed bridge” solution. Through this asymmetric design approach, he pioneered new concepts for bridge design and construction in mountainous regions, enriching the innovative thinking behind cable-stayed bridge designs in mountainous canyons. Pingtang Grand Bridge The “spatial diamond (skirt-like) tower” design he proposed represents the world’s first-ever application of this concept. Without increasing the tower’s volume or weight, it optimizes the stiffness of the piers and towers by adjusting the spacing between the longitudinal tower columns. By employing transfer beams, the design achieves a seamless transition in the stiffness of the piers and towers. This not only enhances the structural mechanics but also significantly reduces construction costs compared to traditional multi-tower cable-stayed bridges that rely on increasing cross-sectional dimensions to boost structural stiffness. In terms of aesthetic appeal, the structure exudes a robust and upright presence, with a visually distinctive layered effect, perfectly integrating bridge aesthetics with structural performance.
With a work ethic characterized by diligence and hard work, coupled with innovative and pioneering thinking, the projects he has overseen have successively won: one Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Guizhou Province; one Second Prize from the China Transportation Association’s Science and Technology Award; one Second Prize in the National Outstanding Engineering Survey and Design Industry Award; two Second Prizes for Outstanding Design from the China Highway Survey and Design Association; three First Prizes for Outstanding Survey and Design in Guizhou Province; four Second Prizes for Outstanding Survey and Design in Guizhou Province; two Third Prizes for Outstanding Survey and Design in Guizhou Province; one First Prize for Outstanding Engineering Consulting from the Guizhou Provincial Engineering Consulting Association; and two Special Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Guizhou Provincial Highway Society. In 2021, the Pingtang Super Bridge received the IBC Gustav Lindenthal Award.
