The 14th China-U.S. Bridge Technology Exchange Conference was held from October 10 to 16 in San Francisco, USA. Yang Jian, Director of the Bridge Design Institute of our company, participated in the event and delivered a speech on the topic of “Introduction to the Design of the Pingtang Super Bridge.” The China-U.S. Bridge Technology Exchange Conference is a specialized exchange conference co-sponsored by the governments of China and the United States. The theme of this year’s conference is “Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Long-term Performance Evaluation of Steel Structure Bridges.”

The U.S. delegation consists of the Bridge Director and Chief Engineer from the Federal Highway Administration, current officials from the California Department of Transportation, the design team for the Oakland Bridge project from TY.LIN, the Bridge Director from the Seattle Transportation Department, and experts from the PEER organization’s bridge resilience program. The U.S. report focuses on topics including steel bridges, bridge resilience and mitigation, the Oakland Bridge, and the reinforcement of steel bridges in Seattle. It also addresses the long-term performance and condition assessment of the more than 600,000 bridges currently in service in the United States, as well as strategies for extending the service life of these bridges. Additionally, the report provides an overview of the SCAN 15-03 project that the U.S. has already undertaken.

The Chinese delegation includes representatives from the China Communications Construction Company Highway Planning and Design Institute, the First Highway Institute, and the Second Highway Institute, as well as from universities such as Chang'an University and Southeast University, and provincial highway design institutes including the Guizhou Provincial Institute and the Sichuan Provincial Institute. The topics of exchange cover steel structure bridge construction, research on steel corrosion in bridges, and the China-U.S. government-to-government science and technology cooperation project. Research on Long-Term Performance Monitoring Technologies and Standards for Large-Span Bridges in China and the United States Work and progress report.

During the conference, we organized visits to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. Through this academic exchange event, we broadened our horizons, gained a deeper understanding of certain details in U.S. bridge construction, and learned about several new concepts. At the same time, we showcased our company’s strength in bridge design. The Chinese and U.S. sides have reached a preliminary agreement that the 2020 China-U.S. Bridge Technology Exchange will be held in Guizhou.
