The “Maker China” SME Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition is a global entrepreneurship contest jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Finance. Since 2016, the “Maker China” SME Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has been successfully held for four consecutive sessions. Over the years, the competition has received a total of 35,000 entries nationwide, selecting and nurturing a number of high-quality projects with core competitiveness. It has become a well-known platform for numerous SMEs to exchange ideas and showcase their innovations.
After three days of competition among 19 participating teams, our department’s project—“Research on Road Traffic Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Technologies in Mountainous Areas under Heavy Fog Conditions Based on Artificial Intelligence”—was awarded the First Prize in the Maker Group of the Guiyang Regional Competition, based on its evaluation across several key criteria: the team’s performance in terms of the product (or service), business model and operational status, market and competitive landscape, business plan, and on-site defense presentation.
Under the nationwide trend of networking highway video surveillance systems, the research on AI-based video image perception technology for mountainous areas affected by heavy fog in this project not only broadens the scope of AI applications in the highway sector but also enhances the efficiency of highway video cameras. The successful demonstration of this perception technology has achieved a qualitative leap in both performance and functionality, effectively replacing traditional methods for detecting fog-induced visibility. Given that Guizhou Province is frequently plagued by adverse weather conditions characterized by persistent heavy fog, the demonstrated results can be widely replicated across Guizhou Province—and even extended to similar highways nationwide—offering promising market prospects and significant competitive advantages.
The highway warning and guidance technology for heavy foggy conditions represents another key technological achievement of this project. The project team innovatively broke away from the limitations inherent in traditional approaches to researching heavy-fog warning and guidance systems. Instead, they focused on studying drivers’ speed behavior in foggy areas, the dynamic characteristics of fog, and drivers’ specific travel needs in foggy weather. Based on these insights, they developed targeted traffic safety guidance schemes for driving in heavy fog. By deploying intelligent, technology-enabled warning and guidance devices, they aim to maximize the safe operation of vehicles in foggy conditions.
