The Yuanhuayu Bridge is a truss-composite arch bridge. In 2014, it was classified as a Class IV dangerous bridge following an inspection. In 2016, the Provincial Highway Bureau approved its demolition and reconstruction. The bridge is located in the Hongfeng Lake Scenic Area, with the area beneath it designated as a first- and second-level water source protection zone for Guiyang City, thus imposing stringent requirements on both landscape aesthetics and environmental protection. At the same time, the new bridge design had to take into account the construction process involved in demolishing the old bridge. After comprehensive comparisons among cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, arch bridges, and beam bridges, the steel tube concrete basket-type arch bridge—featuring excellent landscape effects, high overall structural rigidity, and a well-established construction technology—was selected as the optimal solution.
The span arrangement of the Huayudong Bridge consists of two 20-meter cast-in-place box girders, a single 180-meter steel tube concrete tied-arch bridge, and another 20-meter cast-in-place box girder. The standard width of the bridge deck is 12.5 meters, and the width of the main-span suspension cable area is 14 meters. The arch axis follows a catenary curve with an arch coefficient m = 1.8, a clear rise of 45 meters, and a rise-to-span ratio of 1/4. The bridge system adopts a semi-floating system, with bearings connecting the columns to the cross beams between ribs.
The Huayu Cave Bridge is the first basket-handle arch bridge built in Guizhou Province. During its reconstruction, a creative demolition approach was proposed—using the new bridge to dismantle the old one. This innovative method represents a first-of-its-kind initiative in China and provides an engineering model and valuable experience for future projects of similar nature. The engineering practice of the Huayu Cave Bridge has not only enriched our company’s portfolio of bridge designs but also demonstrated our commitment to innovative, green, and environmentally friendly design principles. It is a significant step taken by our company in implementing the national strategy of building a transportation powerhouse.
