Qu Yuan wrote in his poem: “The road ahead is long and distant; I shall search high and low!” Li Bai wrote in his poem: “The Shu Road is so difficult, harder even than ascending to the blue sky!” Xunzi said: “ The road is both obstructed and long. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” For 64 years, under the leadership of the great Communist Party of China, the surveyors and designers have taken mountains as their companions and roads as their home. With meticulous care and painstaking effort, they’ve carefully laid out one grand avenue after another, forging ahead to write a new chapter in mountain-road surveying and design. 。
Today, we’re launching “[Achieving Greatness in a New Era]” Forge ahead on a new journey ——The “Detailed Exploration of Kan She’s Works: The Highway Series” (Part 2) —— Xingyi Ring Expressway in Qianxinan Prefecture, Guizhou Province.
Project Overview
The Xingyi Ring Expressway in Qianxinan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, was completed and opened to traffic in March 2021. The project has a total length of 62.5 kilometers and an estimated total investment of 10.2 billion yuan. It was designated as a science and technology demonstration project by the Ministry of Transport in 2021, serves as a highway project through which the Guizhou Provincial Department of Transport is fully promoting the “zero” waste disposal concept, and also functions as a green construction technology demonstration project for highways in Guizhou’s karst rocky desertification areas.
The project adheres to green design throughout the entire lifecycle, addressing key challenges in the survey and design of highway construction in karst environments—such as ecological sensitivity, significant topographic variations, complex and highly variable geology, numerous cross-border landform units, and extensive urban crossings—thereby leading the way in green and sustainable highway development in karst rocky desertification regions.

Green Design for Highway Construction in Karst Stone Desertification Areas
Through route optimization, subgrade construction at the foot of the mountains, and the rational use of tunnel sections to avoid deep excavation of the subgrade, we have saved 180 mu of basic farmland and 131 mu of land.
During the construction drawing design phase, “zero” ” Conduct refined design targeting the abandoned area. Taking into account factors such as geological and geomorphological conditions, construction sections, and transportation coordination points, we addressed these issues one by one and proposed... A new approach to earthwork allocation has been developed through three stages, giving rise to a “three-step” strategy for earthwork transportation and achieving “zero” waste disposal along the entire route. This marks a pioneering achievement. Guizhou mountainous region A pioneering design for “zero” waste disposal on expressways.
The Fenglin Bridge is designed with precast concrete bridge decks placed and stored on the approach road embankment, while the steel main girders are fabricated at the steel mill. The approach bridge deck is stacked, assembled, transported, positioned in front of the towers, and lifted onto the bridge deck using specific methods, thereby achieving “zero earthworks, zero protective measures, and zero land occupation” at the bridge construction site.
The design applies automated drip irrigation control technology to the landscaping maintenance of central dividers and service areas, saving more than 80% of water resources and reducing post-maintenance management labor hours by over 90%.
(2) The first large-span steel-concrete composite beam suspension bridge in a mountainous area
The Fenglin Bridge spans the Maliang River Canyon and is a key project of the Xingyi Ring Expressway. With a total length of 1,163 meters, the bridge features a 550-meter main span suspension bridge. The bridge deck is situated 364.2 meters above the canyon floor. It is China’s first large-span steel-concrete composite beam suspension bridge built in a mountainous region. The Fenglin Bridge employs a special asynchronous steel-concrete construction method and a closely timed installation process for bridge deck panels, setting a new national record for the lightest single-lift weight ever recorded during the segmental lifting of main girders for a large-span suspension bridge in a mountainous area.

Meaning and Effectiveness
The completion of the Xingyi Ring Expressway has facilitated the smoother and more efficient diversion of transit traffic around Xingyi City and enhanced connectivity among urban districts. This project holds great significance for revitalizing the old revolutionary base areas along the Zuojiang and Jiang rivers, supporting Xingyi’s urbanization and new industrialization efforts, improving the province’s expressway network, and implementing the “Grand Poverty Alleviation Strategy” to ensure a decisive victory in the battle against poverty.
Relying on the Xingyi Ring Expressway, we have obtained 14 patents and published 14 papers. We have also received the China Highway Society’s Transportation BIM Engineering Innovation Award, the second batch of Green Construction Demonstration Projects in Guizhou Province awarded by the Guizhou Provincial Construction Association, and the “2022” award from the Guizhou Provincial Engineering Investigation and Design Association. First Prize, Guizhou Province Outstanding Survey and Design Award ”。
