The “Tunnel and Underground Space Engineering Innovation Award” is jointly organized and judged by the China Highway Society and Tongji University. This year marks its inaugural edition. A total of 88 project applications were received. After expert review, 5 projects were awarded the Special Prize, 10 projects the First Prize, and 20 projects the Second Prize. 。
Tencent’s Qixingdong Cavern Data Center is China’s first cavern-based data center. Covering an area of 776 mu, the project has a total investment of 820 million yuan. The underground facility boasts a floor space of approximately 30,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 50,000 servers. Construction began in September 2017 and was completed in July 2020. It is currently the data center with the highest protection level in China. This project breaks away from conventional design approaches for above-ground data centers by fully leveraging the geographical environment and the natural advantages of the mountainous site. Based on modular designs for IT, cooling, power supply, and other functional modules, it makes intensive use of underground space while capitalizing on the mountain’s inherent strengths, such as its blast resistance and the thermal insulation properties of rock layers. Employing design strategies like separate hot and cold aisles and independent modular units, the data center achieves maximum resource conservation, environmental protection, and pollution reduction throughout its entire lifecycle, providing a safe, reliable, healthy, and efficient operating environment for electronic information equipment and personnel. Relying on this project, the “Guidelines for Green Data Center Planning and Construction in Gui’an New Area (Trial)” were developed, and three invention patents and utility model patents were obtained. Item.
Tencent’s Qixingdong Cavern Data Center has, for the first time, proposed a cavern-based data center architectural system that leverages newly constructed caverns as its core infrastructure. This initiative has led to the development of a comprehensive set of construction technologies, enabling the realization of new data center objectives characterized by high security and energy efficiency. This award signifies that KanShe Shares’ expertise in underground space design and technological innovation has received widespread recognition within the industry.
