G3 Tongling Yangtze River Road-Rail Bridge Project
Project Overview:
The G3 Tongling Yangtze River Road-Rail Bridge is the world’s first road-rail dual-use bridge featuring a novel combined cable-stayed and suspension bridge system. It is also a major transportation infrastructure project in Anhui Province. The project has a total length of approximately 11.88 kilometers, with the main bridge adopting a combined cable-stayed and suspension bridge structure spanning 988 meters. The upper level accommodates a six-lane双向 highway, while the lower level features a four-track railway (with two additional tracks reserved for future expansion). The project broke ground in January 2022 and completed the acceptance and handover of the road section in July 2025. It is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2025. The project’s estimated total investment is about 8.6 billion yuan. The construction of this bridge faces numerous technical and management challenges, including complex geological conditions, variable hydrological conditions, stringent navigation safety requirements, environmental sensitivity (as it is located adjacent to the Tongling Finless Porpoise National Nature Reserve), and the need for coordinated design and construction across multiple systems. This project represents another landmark achievement in China’s bridge-building sector.
Project Highlights:
- Technologically advanced and structurally innovative: Adopting the world’s first combined rail-and-road “cable-stayed-suspension” collaborative system, which significantly enhances the bridge’s span-carrying capacity and structural efficiency. The steel truss girder of the main bridge was successfully joined in August 2024. New materials and processes, such as UHPC (ultra-high-performance concrete) bridge decks and high-strength corrosion-resistant bolts, have been developed and applied, improving both the structural durability and lightweight performance of the bridge.
- Full-process professional management: The project adopts a “full-process construction management service” model, establishing a specialized project office to provide integrated coordination and management for design, construction, supervision, consulting, and other relevant entities. Through standardized procedures, monthly regular meetings, special reviews, and quarterly comprehensive inspections, the project achieves refined management of quality, safety, schedule, investment, and environmental protection.
- Ecological priority and green construction: The project places great emphasis on the ecological protection of the Yangtze River, rigorously implementing environmental and water conservation measures and undergoing multiple rounds of supervision and inspection by water resources and environmental protection authorities. The project innovatively launched the themed activity “Study the 20th National Congress, Build a Green Bridge” to promote finless porpoise conservation. It also collaborated with the protected area administration to conduct emergency rescue drills for Yangtze finless porpoises, and carried out navigation safety and anti-pollution emergency drills in the construction waters, thereby achieving a harmonious integration of major infrastructure development and the comprehensive protection of the Yangtze River.
- Multi-party collaboration and significant social benefits: The project successfully secured a $300 million sovereign loan from the New Development Bank (NDB), setting a benchmark for international financial cooperation. During construction, it received multiple visits and high praise from leaders at the national ministry level as well as provincial and municipal authorities, and has become a model “Safe Construction Site” project. Upon completion, the bridge will effectively enhance the layout of the national highway and railway networks, boost integrated development in the Yangtze River Delta region, and promote the economic and social progress of Tongling and southern Anhui Province.
Honored Achievements:
- The project has been designated as a demonstration project for “Safe Construction Sites” in Anhui Province’s transportation infrastructure development and has received high praise multiple times during provincial-level quality and safety inspections.
- Formulate industry technical standards such as the "Construction Quality Acceptance Criteria for Steel Truss Girder Bridges in Rail-Road Cable-Stayed and Suspension Bridge Collaborative Systems," and obtain expert review approval from the China Railway Society.
- Successfully filed and implemented multiple patents and construction techniques, achieving a series of technological innovations in areas such as steel truss girder fabrication and installation, cable system construction, and intelligent monitoring.
- The project management model and engineering quality have received repeated recognition and positive feedback from inspections and surveys conducted by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transport, governments at all levels in Anhui Province, and relevant industry authorities, and are regarded as industry benchmarks.
- Upon completion, the project will become a significant milestone in the history of world bridges, and its design, construction, and management experience will provide valuable lessons for the construction of similar large-scale projects.
